HISTORICAL NOTES
Truffles: a gastronomic treasure
Truffles have a long history that dates back to ancient times. They have been prized since the times of the Romans and ancient Greeks, who considered them a gift from the gods and used them both in cooking and for medicinal purposes.
During the Middle Ages, truffles continued to be considered a prized food and were often used as a trade commodity between nobles and feudal lords. However, their status as a gastronomic delicacy became even more evident during this period. During the Renaissance, truffles reached their peak of popularity, becoming a beloved ingredient of royal courts and European nobles. They were often served at sumptuous banquets and considered a symbol of wealth and social status.
Over the following centuries, truffles underwent periods of decline, often due to deforestation and loss of natural habitat. However, in the 19th century, thanks to conservation efforts and growing gastronomic interest, truffles experienced a revival.
Today, truffles are still considered a gastronomic treasure and a symbol of luxury. Its most prized varieties, such as the white and black truffles, are sought and harvested by expert truffle hunters and are admired and used by top chefs around the world.
